Beth Fremont and Jennifer Scribner-Snyder know that somebody is monitoring their work email. (Everybody in the newsroom knows. It’s company policy.) But they can’t quite bring themselves to take is seriously. They go on sending each other endless and endlessly hilarious emails, discussing every aspect of their personal lives.

Meanwhile, Lincoln O’Neill can’t believe this is his job now – reading others people’s email. When he applied to be ‘internet security officer,’ he pictured himself building firewalls and crushing hackers – not writing up a report every time a sports reporter forwards a dirty joke.

When Lincoln comes across Beth’s and Jennifer’s messages, he knows he should turn them in. But he can’t help being entertained – and captivated – by their stories. By the time Lincoln realises he’s falling for Beth, it’s way too late to introduce himself.

Characters:

Lincoln is an internet security officer and its his job to read everyone who works at the newsroom’s email. He is a funny, nerdy, dorky and extremely relatable character. I did become a little bit frustrated with him at times, when he knew what he needed to do or what he wanted and wouldn’t do anything about it. Overall he was a realistic and kind of adorable narrator.

Beth and Jennifer are two best friends, who both work at the same company as Lincoln. Lincoln meets them through their email exchanges about all the personal  details of their lives. Both of these characters are funny and sarcastic and smart. Reading their emails to each other were the highlight of the book for me.

Plot:

The actual plot of this book was fairly slow-paced and was more about the development of the characters than anything else, which is something I’ve really been enjoying lately. The book starts with Lincoln hating his job and being miserable. He reads Beth and Jennifer’s emails and chooses not to turn them in, because he finds them funny and sees their exchanges as innocent enough. You then start to see him slowly fall for one of the girls and struggle to turn his life around. You also get to experience Beth and Jennifer changing within themselves and within their relationships. The book is set in 1999, with the Y2K bug being a kind of subplot to the whole story. This book is classic, beautiful Rainbow in both its simplicity as well as its ability to leave you completely heartbroken for the characters.

Writing Style:

This book is kind of split into two. The chapters alternate between Beth and Jennifer’s email conversations and third person following Lincoln’s point of view. May I just say, Rainbow is a legend at writing conversations and exchanges. It makes me so happy. All around Rainbow’s writing is realistic and relatable, while being both completely hilarious and heartbreaking. She’s my favourite author for a reason. This isn’t my favourite book of hers (from what I’ve read so far) but I still really enjoyed it. I will read anything she writes, as I’ve said before.

Conclusion:

This book was beautiful and entertaining and all around a joy to read. The characters were hilarious and relatable. The plot was realistic, but super intriguing. The writing style was beautiful, classic Rainbow. I’m so glad this author is a part of my life. I would recommend this to someone who has never read a book, by Rainbow Rowell before, as I think this would be a good place to start. Also, to anyone who is a fan of Rowell and hasn’t yet read it. If you are in the mood for a cute, (mostly) lighthearted realistic fiction or romance, this is a fun, quick read.

October Book Haul

Hey everyone,

I bought books and I’m happy. Thought I might share it with you. 🙂

So, what did I buy?

1. The Knife Of Never Letting Go, by Patrick Ness – I have heard so many brilliant things about Patrick Ness and this trilogy and really wanted to see what all the hype is about. I thought this might be a good place to start.

Prentisstown isn’t like other towns. Everyone can hear everyone else’s thoughts in a constant, overwhelming, never-ending Noise. There is no privacy. There are no secrets.

Then, just one month away from the birthday that will make Todd Hewitt a man, he unexpectedly stumbles on a spot of complete silence. Which is impossible.

Breathtakingly exciting and emotionally charged, The Knife of Never Letting Go is a compellingly original story of fear, flight and the terrifying path of self-discovery.

2. Everything, Everything, by Nicola Yoon – I’m so excited to read this. I’ve heard so many good things about this book. So far, I have managed to stay away from spoilers of this ‘twist ending’ I keep hearing about. Hopefully, I’ll get a chance to read it soon. Can I also mention, I love this cover. I swear when I first got it, I stared at it for a good 10 minutes.

3. Attachments, by Rainbow Rowell – If it’s Rainbow, it’s worth a read. My sister has already read this and has said it is now one of her favourites. I really hope to get to this soon.

It’s 1999 and the internet is still a novelty. At a newspaper office, two colleagues, Beth and Jennifer, e-mail back and forth, discussing their lives in hilarious detail, from love troubles to family dramas. And Lincoln, a shy IT guy responsible for monitoring e-mails, spends his hours reading every exchange.

At first their e-mails offer a welcome diversion, but the more he reads, the more he finds himself falling for one of them. By the time Lincoln realises just how head-over-hells his is, it’s too late to introduce himself.

After a series of close encounters, Lincoln eventually decides he must follow his heart… and find out if there is such a things as love before first sight.

4. The Heroes of Olympus: The Blood of Olympus, by Rick Riordan – For some reason the box set I got of Heroes of Olympus did not have this book in it. Weird, I know. But I have it know, so all is okay. I will be reading this quite soon as I am currently up to House of Hades. I love the seven pictured on the front. I’m not sure why, but this made me very happy. Maybe, I’m hoping that that means they’ll all survive House of Hades. Wishful thinking, I know.

Seven heroic demigods. One final quest. The greatest sacrifice yet.

5. And last but not least, I-finally-have-this-in-my-hands-and-I’m-not-hyperventilating-at-all-what-are-you-talking-about. Carry On: The Rise and Fall of Simon Snow, by Rainbow Rowell – I have actually already read it. It only took me two days. It would have taken less if sleep wasn’t necessary and I didn’t have to go to school. Holy wow, this book was amazing. I’m going to stop ranting now and save it for the review (which I might post as soon as tonight. Depending on how I go with homework etc.) Just asdgfhkjtrbn.

Simon Snow is the worst chosen one who’s ever been chosen.

That’s what his roommate, Baz, says. And Baz might be evil and a vampire and a complete git, but he’s probably right.

Half the time Simon can’t even make his wand work, and the other half, he sets something on fire. His mentor’s avoiding him, his girlfriend broke up with him, and there’s a magic-eating monster running around wearing Simon’s face. Baz would be having a field day with all this, if he were here – it’s their last year at the Watford School of Magicks, and Simon’s infuriating nemesis didn’t even bother to show up.

Carry On: The Rise and Fall of Simon Snow is a ghost story, a love story, and a mystery. It had just as much kissing and talking as you’d expect from a Rainbow Rowell story – but far, far more monsters.
