Hello there and yes I am still alive. I will explain my absence soon, but for now I thought I would just give you a post. I know it’s terribly late, but I still wanted to post it.

• Midnight Alley (Morganville Vampires #3), by Rachel Caine :

When Claire Danvers learned that her college town was run by vampires, she did what any intelligent, self-preserving freshman would do: She applied for a transfer and stocked up on garlic. The transfer is no longer an option, but that garlic may come in handy.

The third book in this series and I’m still quite enjoying it. It feels like a bit of a guilty pleasure. If I’m honest, some of the characters are getting a tad tiring, which is why I took a bit of a break from the series. Overall the story is addictive and interesting. 3/5

 

• Matilda, by Roald Dahl :

Matilda is a little girl who is far too good to be true. At age five-and-a-half she’s knocking off double-digit multiplication problems and blitz-reading Dickens. Even more remarkably, her classmates love her even though she’s a super-nerd and the teacher’s pet. But everything is not perfect in Matilda’s world. For starters she has two of the most idiotic, self-centered parents who ever lived. Then there’s the large, busty nightmare of a school principal, Mrs. (“The”) Trunchbull, a former hammer-throwing champion who flings children at will and is approximately as sympathetic as a bulldozer. Fortunately for Matilda, she has the inner resources to deal with such annoyances: astonishing intelligence, saintly patience, and an innate predilection for revenge.

She warms up with some practical jokes aimed at her hapless parents, but the true test comes when she rallies in defense of her teacher, the sweet Miss Honey, against the diabolical Trunchbull. There is never any doubt that Matilda will carry the day. Even so, this wonderful story is far from predictable. Roald Dahl, while keeping the plot moving imaginatively, also has an unerring ear for emotional truth. The reader cares about Matilda because in addition to all her other gifts, she has real feelings.

I decided that I hadn’t read enough Roald Dahl books. Better late than never, right? 5/5

• Chained, by Susanna Valenti :

She knows she will probably die, but Maya has seen enough of death and she won’t let it have her without a fight.

Loved this. Review to come. 4/5

So much cute. I cannot. Too much. 5/5

• I Was Here, by Gayle Forman :

I Was Here is Gayle Forman at her finest, a taut, emotional, and ultimately redemptive story about redefining the meaning of family and finding a way to move forward even in the face of unspeakable loss.

Extremely thought-provoking and so, so tragic. It has really stuck with me. 4/5

• Throne of Glass, by Sarah J. Maas:

After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.

Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king’s council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she’ll serve the kingdom for four years and then be granted her freedom. Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilirating. But she’s bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her… but it’s the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.

Then one of the other contestants turns up dead… quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

Started off slow and I really struggled with it for a while. Warmed up towards the end. The romance! *sigh* Really quite liked it and hoping to read the next one sooner rather than later. 3.5/5

Other than my utter blogging failure of January, I think reading went rather well for me. 6 books is rather a lot for one month, for me anyway.

I will post again, as soon as I can. I’ll try and catch up on some of your posts too.
