January in Books

Hello there and yes I am still alive. I will explain my absence soon, but for now I thought I would just give you a post. I know it’s terribly late, but I still wanted to post it.

All synopsis’s from Goodreads.

  • Midnight Alley (Morganville Vampires #3), by Rachel Caine :

When Claire Danvers learned that her college town was run by vampires, she did what any intelligent, self-preserving freshman would do: She applied for a transfer and stocked up on garlic. The transfer is no longer an option, but that garlic may come in handy.

The third book in this series and I’m still quite enjoying it. It feels like a bit of a guilty pleasure. If I’m honest, some of the characters are getting a tad tiring, which is why I took a bit of a break from the series. Overall the story is addictive and interesting. 3/5

AA Midnight Alley

  • Matilda, by Roald Dahl :

Matilda is a little girl who is far too good to be true. At age five-and-a-half she’s knocking off double-digit multiplication problems and blitz-reading Dickens. Even more remarkably, her classmates love her even though she’s a super-nerd and the teacher’s pet. But everything is not perfect in Matilda’s world. For starters she has two of the most idiotic, self-centered parents who ever lived. Then there’s the large, busty nightmare of a school principal, Mrs. (“The”) Trunchbull, a former hammer-throwing champion who flings children at will and is approximately as sympathetic as a bulldozer. Fortunately for Matilda, she has the inner resources to deal with such annoyances: astonishing intelligence, saintly patience, and an innate predilection for revenge.

She warms up with some practical jokes aimed at her hapless parents, but the true test comes when she rallies in defense of her teacher, the sweet Miss Honey, against the diabolical Trunchbull. There is never any doubt that Matilda will carry the day. Even so, this wonderful story is far from predictable. Roald Dahl, while keeping the plot moving imaginatively, also has an unerring ear for emotional truth. The reader cares about Matilda because in addition to all her other gifts, she has real feelings.

I decided that I hadn’t read enough Roald Dahl books. Better late than never, right? 5/5

  • Chained, by Susanna Valenti :

Terrified of the contamination and the creatures it has created, humanity hides behind The Wall. No one knows what lies beyond the wasteland. Maya has never thought much about what might still be out there, lurking in the forgotten places. But when she’s thrust into the unknown, she is forced to question everything she has ever been told. Not everyone outside died, some of them became something… else. As her heart is torn in two, every choice she makes is harder than the last. What she discovers will change her forever. She knows she will probably die, but Maya has seen enough of death and she won’t let it have her without a fight.

Loved this. Review to come. 4/5

  • Girl Online On Tour, by Zoe Sugg :

The sequel to the number-one bestseller Girl Online. Penny joins her rock-star boyfriend, Noah, on his European music tour.

Penny’s bags are packed.

When Noah invites Penny on his European music tour, she can’t wait to spend time with her rock-god-tastic boyfriend.

But, between Noah’s jam-packed schedule, less-than-welcoming bandmates and threatening messages from jealous fans, Penny wonders whether she’s really cut out for life on tour. She can’t help but miss her family, her best friend Elliot . . . and her blog, Girl Online.

Can Penny learn to balance life and love on the road, or will she lose everything in pursuit of the perfect summer?

So much cute. I cannot. Too much. 5/5

  • I Was Here, by Gayle Forman :

Cody and Meg were inseparable.
Two peas in a pod.
Until . . . they weren’t anymore.
When her best friend Meg drinks a bottle of industrial-strength cleaner alone in a motel room, Cody is understandably shocked and devastated. She and Meg shared everything—so how was there no warning? But when Cody travels to Meg’s college town to pack up the belongings left behind, she discovers that there’s a lot that Meg never told her. About her old roommates, the sort of people Cody never would have met in her dead-end small town in Washington. About Ben McAllister, the boy with a guitar and a sneer, who broke Meg’s heart. And about an encrypted computer file that Cody can’t open—until she does, and suddenly everything Cody thought she knew about her best friend’s death gets thrown into question.

I Was Here is Gayle Forman at her finest, a taut, emotional, and ultimately redemptive story about redefining the meaning of family and finding a way to move forward even in the face of unspeakable loss.

Extremely thought-provoking and so, so tragic. It has really stuck with me. 4/5

  • Throne of Glass, by Sarah J. Maas:

After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.

Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king’s council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she’ll serve the kingdom for four years and then be granted her freedom. Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilirating. But she’s bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her… but it’s the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.

Then one of the other contestants turns up dead… quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

Started off slow and I really struggled with it for a while. Warmed up towards the end. The romance! *sigh* Really quite liked it and hoping to read the next one sooner rather than later. 3.5/5

Other than my utter blogging failure of January, I think reading went rather well for me. 6 books is rather a lot for one month, for me anyway.

I will post again, as soon as I can. I’ll try and catch up on some of your posts too.

Love you and I missed you all. I’m so glad to be back.

Top Ten Bookish Resolutions 2016

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly link-up event hosted by the lovely people at The Broke and the Bookish.

This week our topic is Top Ten Resolutions We Have For 2016 and they can be bookish or personal resolutions. I’ve decided to go with mostly bookish resolutions and a few blogging resolutions. And here we go…

Reading Related Goals:

  1. Read 60 Books: This is my first time participating in the Goodreads Reading Challenge, since I only got an account a few weeks ago. I ended up reading 54 books in 2015, so I thought I would challenge myself and make my goal 60 books this year. If you have Goodreads, it would be cool if you could add me. *lots of smiles and winky faces*
  2. Read 1 Roald Dahl book a month: This might seem a little random, but I’ve only ever read one Roald Dahl book from memory and my sister owns a bunch of them. So I decided I should just read them. I’ve just started reading Matilda and I’m enjoying it a lot. It’s a bit of comic relief from my usual reads anyway.
  3. Finish reading the Morganville Vampires series: I am currently just about to start the 4th book in this series and I’m really quite enjoying it. There are 15 books in this series (I think??). And I would like to read as many of them as possible.
  4. Read more variety: I’ll be honest I’m not really a fan of adult fiction, its just not as fun and relatable as young adult, so I cannot say I will stray too much from this genre, but I would like to explore different genre’s within young adult. Does that make sense? I tend to stay in my comfort zone of either fantasy or contemporary, but I would love to read more sci-fi or historical fiction or something else.
  5. Read more new releases: I read 2-3 last year, but I really need to read more, because I’m missing out on a lot. 😦
  6. Read some ARC’s: I’m just now setting up a contact page so people can contact me if they would like me to read and review their book/s! I’m really keen for that to start happening. I’m also thinking of getting a NetGalley account, but I’m not really sure what that entails, so I’ll have to do my research. 🙂

Blogging Related Goals:

  1. Post TTT’s on time: I love writing Top Ten Tuesday posts like this, but I have a terrible habit of writing them at the last minute… or a few days after Tuesday. They have the topics up months beforehand, so this all changes today.
  2. Post at least 1-2 posts a week throughout the whole year: It gets pretty tough to post regularly in exam blocks, but I think I should still be able to manage this. Here’s hoping.
  3. Schedule more posts: This is pretty simple. I just need to sit down and do it. 😂
  4. Post about more of a variety of things: Originally this blog wasn’t even a book blog, but now that it is I need to write some more original stuff to make my blog unique from other book blogs. I have a few ideas…

There you go! I hope to look back on this list later in the year and be able to tick all of these off. Haha, here’s hoping!

What are your bookish/blogging resolutions? Feel free to link to your TTT post, or your new year resolution post, so I’ll be sure to check it out! 🙂

See ya’ll soon 😘

January TBR

Hi! How is the new year treating you so far?

The new year feels pretty much the same to me. I have a few goals in mind, but we’ll get to that another time.

For today, I have a list of books I would like to read this month. I’m still on school holidays, so I’m going to be totally crazy and put 8 books on this list, which is about double of what I would normally read, but oh well. We’ll give it a try.

I read a total of 54 books last year, which was great for me, though I hadn’t made a Goodreads Challenge. This year, I’m aiming to read 60 books as a part of my Goodreads 2016 Reading Challenge, which will be a bit of a challenge.

I also made myself a bit of a challenge to read more Roald Dahl books. I’ve only ever read The Witches from memory, but my sister owns pretty much all of them. So I am aiming to read one a month! I’m going to start with Matilda, because its about a girl who loves reading so…. I’ve got to love it, right?

Anyway, let us get to the point…

  1. Chained (Cage of Lies #1), by Susanne Valenti
  2. Linked (Cage of Lies #2), by Susanne Valenti
  3. Feast of Fools (Morganville Vampires #4), by Rachel Caine
  4. Lord of Misrule (Morganville Vampires #5), by Rachel Caine
  5. Girl Online: On Tour, by Zoe Sugg
  6. I Was Here, by Gayle Forman
  7. Matilda, by Roald Dahl
  8. Throne of Glass, by Sarah J. Maas

There you go! It’s a bit of a strange mix, but I’m still super keen to get started on another wonderful year of reading. 😄

What do you plan to read this month? Have you read any of the books on my list? If so, what are your thoughts on them?

Happy New Year again! 😘

Ellie ❤

December Wrap Up

Hello everyone and happy new year to you all! I hope you had an amazing night and had a lot of fun celebrating.

I just thought I’d do a little post to wrap up the month.

So what happened in December?

Holidays. Holiday bliss. I did a whole lot of nothing and intend to continue that for the rest of my summer holidays. It will be amazing. 😍

Christmas happened and I received a lot of books. They will keep me busy for the next month or so. 😊

I also updated the theme and style of my blog, which I was really excited about. New blog, new background, new logo, new fonts and stuff. I don’t know, I was excited and I guess that’s all that matters.

Anyway, let’s move onto the more important things… Books! What did I read/review this month?

  1. My Sister’s Keeper, by Jodi Picoult (3/5): I liked this book, but I didn’t love it. There were a lot of things that frustrated me about this book and it just made it difficult to read.
  2. The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud (3.5/5): This book could have been haunting and thought-provoking, but I just didn’t like how it was written. I liked it, but I had a too many problems with it. I wanted it to be memorable, but it just didn’t click with me. I loved the idea though. The movie was also good.
  3. Glass Houses (Morganville Vampires #1), by Rachel Caine (4/5):  Something about vampire books that I just love. It’s a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. This one is definitely for fans of Twilight.
  4. The Dead Girl’s Dance (Morganville Vampires #2), by Rachel Caine
  5. Midnight Alley (Morganville Vampires #3), by Rachel Caine: I’m almost finished this one, but I don’t plan on reviewing the rest of the series, I feel like I’ve said all I need to about it in my Glass Houses review.
  6. Chained, by Susanne Valenti: I was given a copy of this in exchange for a review. I’ve just started it and I’m really enjoying it. I hope to finish it as soon as possible.

And that’s it! How has your month been? Honestly, mine was a bit downer and I expected a lot more from the books I did read.

Anyway, I have a bunch of new books from Christmas to read this month and I can’t wait to get into it!

Happy New Year!!

Ellie ❤

13 Best Books of 2015

Hello and Happy New Year’s Eve to you all! 🎉🎉 (Is that a thing? It’s totally a thing, right?) Everyone has been writing these lists lately, but I wanted to wait until right at the very end of the year, just in case I read anything in the last weeks of December that was worthy.

Originally I wanted to cut this list down to 10 books, but I just couldn’t and all of these are amazing. Anyway, 13 is my favourite number so I decided it was meant to be. 😊

Anyway, let’s begin the countdown!

13. Everything, Everything, by Nicola Yoon: This was such a cute book. Just… 😊😊😊. It was adorable and also super thought-provoking. I enjoyed it a lot and just had to include it in this list!

12. Joel and Cat Set the Story Straight, by Nick Earls and Rebecca Sparrow : Another very cute story with some serious elements. It was so much fun and I was rooting for the characters from the get go. Loved it a lot.

11. Paper Towns, by John Green: This book is probably my favourite John Green book. I love the road trip elements and the mystery. It was definitely a memorable one for me.

10. Girl Online, by Zoe Sugg: This book was so extremely cute! I just received the sequel and I’m soo looking forward to cuddling up to another cute story. It was definitely a lot of fun.

9. It’s Kind of a Funny Story, by Ned Vizzini: This book is one of the more serious books on this list. It’s about a boy who has depression and who checks himself into the hospital because he wants to kill himself. It was an amazing story of his journey and it was really memorable.

8. If I Stay and Where She Went, by Gayle Foreman: 😍 This book was just so amazing and perfect really. The flashbacks slowly told the story and it felt like you had to make the choice to. So beautiful. I actually like Where She Went even more!

7. Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, by Rick Riordan: Percy Jackson is my number one book boyfriend. Sorry, guys, he’s mine. I know I wasn’t here first, but I make up for it in enthusiasm. This includes the whole Percy Jackson series, as well as, the Heroes of Olympus.

6. The Giver, by Lois Lowry: This was a re-read, but it definitely was still as amazing the second time. It is such a haunting read and would definitely be my current favourite YA dystopia.

5. Clockwork Angel, by Cassandra Clare: The world building in this book is just perfect. I loved it so much. And Will and Jem! 😍😍 I loved the whole trilogy so much. I just can’t explain how amazing it was.

4. Will Grayson, Will Grayson, by John Green and David Levithan: I wasn’t sure about it when I first read it, but the story kind of stuck with me. I just couldn’t stop thinking about it!

3. Eleanor and Park, by Rainbow Rowell: This story was so adorable and filled me with happy. It was so sweet and refreshingly realistic. Rainbow has done it again!

2. The Perks of Being a Wallflower, by Stephen Chbosky: This book is so beautiful and relatable and so much goodness and smile and tears and everything.

  1. Carry On: The Rise and Fall of Simon Snow, by Rainbow Rowell: And the grand prize goes to… This was without a doubt my favourite book of the year. I have never fangirled so much over a book in my life. I can’t even now, sum it up without just… asfdjgh. So much perfection and beautifulness and I need more of this in my life. Thank you so much Rainbow for being fabulous and giving us these beautiful things!! If you would like to experience some more incoherent fangirling, feel free to click the link above. 😂

Yay! I finally did this post. I hope you enjoyed it! It was so nice to think about all the books I’ve read this year and reminisce, I guess.

Have you posted your list yet? Feel free to link it in the comments so I can check it out!

Did you have any of the same books as me?

Anyone want to fangirl over Carry On? Nope, just me. That’s fine.

Happy New Year ya’ll. I will be spending a whole day offline as of 12 tonight. So I’ll talk to you on the 2nd! I will try to schedule a post for tomorrow. Fingers crossed!

See you on the other side!

Ellie ❤

Top Ten Most Anticipated New Releases for 2016

I’m late again 😂 New years resolution: Post a TTT on time!

I really need to work on that. Anyway, Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. You know the deal.

This weeks theme is Top Ten Most Anticipated New Releases for the First Half of 2016. Just a quick note: You may notice that my list is all of 2016. Firstly, I don’t usually find out about new releases until I start seeing reviews on them and secondly, I am always hesitant to start series that aren’t fully out yet, because I despise the wait. But anyway, I do have three candidates that I’m practically counting down for, so I thought I’d share them with you. 😊

  1. Lady Midnight (Dark Artifices #1), by Cassandra Clare (March 16, 2016): Oh My Gosh. I’m super duper excited.😍 I don’t think I’ve even read the synopsis to be honest. But I’m pretty sure I’ll love it and it will fantastic and heartbreaking, but I’m not looking forward to the wait between books. 😣13541054.jpg
  2. The Hidden Oracle (The Trials of Apollo #1), by Rick Riordan (May 3rd 2016): Gah. Apollo is … just.. just… asdfghjlkjtgr. I literally cannot. I screamed when it was confirmed that this was a thing. IT IS VERY MUCH A THING! I need more Percabeth. And Will and Nico. 😍 And just LEO. Nope, can’t. Will be in the corner, rocking back in forth, alternating between tears, screaming and hysterical laughter. I’ll be there if you need me.635848268713504573-Trials-of-Apollo-Final-cover-for-reveal.jpg
  3. My Best Friends is a Goddess, by Tara Eglington: (no cover yet) (Expected October 2016) I Love love love love How to Keep a Boy From Kissing You. I would say it is my favourite YA contemporary novel ever. Hayden Paris is the ultimate book boyfriend! I am really keen to read this book as soon as it comes out!!

And that is all! I should really start getting more into new releases… I make up for my lack of numbers with enthusiasm! I’m just hesitant to start series that aren’t complete (Well, other than these. These are necessary and life giving.) because I really dislike the yearly wait. It is pain. Anyone feel the same?

So, what on your list? Do we share any? I would love to chat (*cough* fangirl *cough*) with you.

I will be posting my top books of 2015 post tomorrow, seeing as it is new years eve. Look out for that, if your interested. 🙂

See ya’ll soon

Book Review: Glass Houses

Book: Glass Houses (Morganville Vampires #1), by Rachel Caine

Published: October 3rd 2006

Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal, Vampire, Urban Fantasy, Romance

Page Count: 239

Goodreads Rating: 3.93

IMG_1044.jpg

Synopsis (from Goodreads):

From the author of the popular Weather Warden series comes the debut of an exciting new series set in Morganville, Texas, where you would be well advised to avoid being out after dark.

College freshman, Claire Danvers, has had enough of the nightmarish dorm situation. When Claire heads off-campus, the imposing old house where she finds a room may not be much better. Her new roommates don’t show many signs of life, but they’ll have Claire’s back when the town’s deepest secrets come crawling out, hungry for fresh blood. Will she be able to face the town’s terror, or will she drown like everyone else?

Characters:

Claire Danvers is sixteen and a freshman in the college town of Morganville, Texas. She is supposedly too smart for her own good, but honestly, if she were half as smart as she thinks she is, she would be twice as smart as she is. If she had any logical thoughts, she wouldn’t have gotten herself into so many ridiculous and dangerous situations. Claire is a little bit annoying and well, she isn’t very original (in my opinion), but at the same time… I kind of loved her and related to her. Maybe that’s why she annoyed me..? 😂

Eve is fully Goth and also lives in the Glass House. I also found her a little annoying. So really, the only reason I was reading this book was for the guys. 😍 Oml, in my mind they are so gorgeous and 😋. Is that weird? Heck, maybe I’m weird. What are you gonna do?

Shane is a total hottie and though he is a bit of a hothead, he is a real sweetie so far. And he’s so cute with Claire. Michael… Michael, is beautiful and just completely perfect and *dramatic sigh*. Well except for that one thing (SPOILER) where his is a ghost and can’t leave the house and can only appear as a human after sunset. (SPOILER OVER). Otherwise, he is totally beautiful and Eve should just propose now so she doesn’t lose him. Michael is totally book boyfriend material and is so protective and caring. I just love him a lot, okay? Don’t judge. 💁😊

square copy.png

Plot:

In this book, Claire accidentally messes with some people she shouldn’t and gets into trouble and then they all nearly die a few times. Fun! Basically in Morganville you can be Protected by one of the vampires, which means you are their property and none of the other vampires can hurt you. There are obviously pros and cons to this. Claire is new to town and is unprotected and so are all of her friends, which puts them in a lot of danger even if they stay indoors at night time.

I loved the story of this book. There is something about vampires and books about them, that just gets me every single time. I just find vampire novels addictive! I can’t work out exactly what it is that I love about them. I’ll let you know if I work it out. 😉 I just loved it.

One problem that I had with this book was that the girls were portrayed as weak and dependant on the guys to rescue them. It was annoying and pathetic, but that seems to be how all girls in vampire novels are… 😏

square copy.png

Writing Style:

The book is written in third person, mostly following Claire and her friends near death experiences. I’ve never read a books by Rachel Caine, but I’m already up to the third book in this series, so she’s definitely doing something right! I feel like there are some gaps in the story. Just small details though, but it was frustrating me. I’m not sure how to explain it, but I assume everything will become clear as I continue to read the series.

square copy.png

Conclusion:

I really enjoyed this book and plan to continue this series until I’m finished (though there are 15 books so it may take a while) or until I’m bored with it. I didn’t like the two female leads, they were annoying and my inner feminist was shouting at them. The guys however were complete hotties and potential new book boyfriends. They are still pending review. As I said, I love books about vampires for some strange reason that I can’t exactly pinpoint. I’m loving this series so far and would definitely recommend it to anyone who is interested. Especially if you are a fan of Twilight, I almost guarantee you’ll love this.

Rating:

4/5 Stars

Have you read this series? What are your thoughts? Does anyone else have the same thing with books about vampires? Let’s chat 🙂

Oh, before I go. Meet Tinker. IMG_1025.jpg

He is one of my foster kitten babies and he was trying to steal the show yesterday when I was taking pics for my December Book Haul. I was going to add this in that post, but I forgot so I thought I’d do it today. He’s such a cutie. 😍😊

Alright, good night/good day to ya’ll. See you next time. 😘

December Book Haul

Hello!

This is my December Book Haul (hence the title), where I will share with you all of the books I have received/bought this month. 🙂

IMG_0992

Books I Have Bought This Month:

IMG_0994.jpg

The Tenth Circle, by Jodi Picoult: There was a book sale somewhere (I can’t remember where) and there were books for 50 cents, so I thought I’d get this one. I’m very keen to find a book by Jodi Picoult that I like. The ones I’ve read aren’t bad, but I didn’t love them much.

Books I Received For Christmas:

IMG_0998.jpg

Illustrated Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone: It’s so pretty and I could just sit there and stroke it. 😍 I love it a lot and can’t wait to read it and collect the others over the next 7 years.

IMG_1015.jpg

The Encyclopaedia of Mythology, by Arthur Cotterell: This might seem kind of random, but I have a bit of an obsession with mythology (thank you Rick Riordan).

IMG_1006.jpg

Girl Online On Tour, by Zoe Sugg: EEEEEE! I finally have this book and it’s so pretty and I know a lot of people didn’t love Girl Online but I thought it was so cute and I love Zoe and I can’t wait to read this!!! Okay, okay. Punctuation is kind of important. Will keep that in mind. 😋 I’m just so glad I can finally read this.

IMG_0999.jpg

I Am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced, by Nujood Ali: I definitely wasn’t expecting this, but now I’m very interested in reading this. It’s surely not going to be a light read, but I’m still intrigued.

IMG_1009.jpg

We Were Liars, by E. Lockhart: I’ve heard a lot of good things about this book and can’t wait to see what all the talk is about!

IMG_1011.jpg

I Was Here, by Gayle Forman: I have wanted to read this for such a long time and finally I can! It is definitely something that I’m interested in, so I can’t wait to get into it.

IMG_1004.jpg

Throne of Glass, by Sarah J. Maas: I need to read a Sarah J. Maas book already. I figured this might be a good start.

And that is all. 8 Books! That’s pretty good. I’m very grateful for all of these and just very happy, because I have new babies.

Also – I have a bit of a problem. These books don’t fit on my bookshelf… I will have to see if I can re-arrange them a bit. Anyone else have this problem after their Christmas hauls? I can’t be the only one…

I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and/or a Happy Holidays!

Lots of love,

Ellie ❤
